Giveaways: Yay or nay?

So we decided it would be a great idea to aim for a monthly blog section on 'Yay or Nay?' regarding a different aspect each month in social media.

Many of our clients, and even friends and family will ask 'Why do businesses do that?' 'What is that?' and most importantly: 'Does it actually work?'

So keep reading and find out our thoughts on giveaways on social media.



So what are we referring to when we say 'Giveaway' ?


“We found an increase of 100 followers within the first few hours of running the giveaway.”

Giveaways are very popular on Instagram and even Facebook. Essentially, it's when a brand or influencer decides to put together a prize, goodie bag or even experience (hotel stay, massage etc) away to a winner! Sounds pretty good?

Usually they follow the same basic rules:

The entrants must be following them, and the company the giveaway is affiliated with (if there is one)

The entrants must like the post, and tag 2 friends in the comments.

So giveaways appeal to us because who doesn't want to get something for free?! It also builds trust and loyalty with followers as they feel that the brand or influencer wants to offer something to them and give them the opportunity to receive a gift



So why do brands and influencers host giveaways?


So unfortunately there really is no such thing as a free lunch, and giveaways aren't really ran for the goodness of the company or influencer's heart. Giveaways are actually a fantastic marketing tactic to gain massive amounts of followers, engagement and likes on a post.

They create a hype around that particular post and invites followers to tag their friends who may not already be following you, who will most likely follow you themselves and then tag more people and so on.

This can lead to unprecedented amounts of growth. Especially if the giveaway is national or even international as it allows a much larger audience to be drawn to your page and enter the giveaway.



So is there a catch?


“Don't try to pull the wool over your audiences eyes”

It's never nice to do something that you actually gain from, and attempt to make out as if you are doing it for the benefit of others. So it's important with giveaways not to over do it with any granduos speel about how you want to 'give back' and 'show your love' etc, as most people are aware that giveaways do attract gain for the person hosting it.

Simply be excited, and let them know that you're hosting a giveaway and would love for them to enter (no need for fake altruism here). In short, don't try to pull the wool over your audiences eyes!

As for the catch? There isn't one really, however there are of course some 'downsides' or moreso, things to be taken into account.

You have to decide if your giveaway is going to be chosen at random, or if you're going to hand pick the winner.

When choosing at random you'll also have to find a site that will auto generate a winner for you. If you're selecting a winner yourself, what criteria is it going to be based off?

You must ensure this information is shared in the original caption so entrants know whether they have fulfilled all the requirements and can consent to entering the giveaway.


Lastly, tips for running a successful giveaway!


So, after all that you've decided to run a giveaway - great idea. But how can you run a successful one?

It's important to choose a prize that is in theme with your brand, or niche. Ask yourself, are you a travel blogger, a cosmetics company, a foodie or a start up business? Whatever it may be, your prize must be relevant.

Secondly, will your prize be a big one or just a small giveaway? Some brands run huge giveaways offering international flights and accomodation, and other giveaways are simply a small selection of products or even a $100 meal voucher if you're a restaurant/cafe.


Most giveaways are actually collaborations as well. So if you're a blogger, you could team up with a brand that you like and vice versa. This type of collaboration works very well as the entrants must follow both accounts involved in the giveaway and thus is mutually beneficial for the brand and the blogger.



So now you're all set! Overrall, we vote giveaways: a Yay!

Generally they are a very successful and reliable means of boosting your following and engagement, especially if you're wanting to reach a milestone such as a '10k giveaway' etc.
